Ensimmäisinä ohjelmointikielinä suosittelisin kyllä Pascal:ia (joka muuten suunniteltiin alunpitäen nimenomaan vain opiskelua varten.) Myös Visual Basic on nykyisellään käyttökelpoinen, Javasta en ole pitänyt koskaan, mutta sekin on helpoimmasta päästä. C# on luonnollisesti sidoksissa Mikkisoftan virtuaalikoneeseen, joskin tästäkin on tie ulos avulla, joka tuo mukanaan paitsi virtuaalikoneen alustaksi, niin myös C# kääntäjän.

Monon kohdalla tilanne on sellainen, että vasta virtuaalikoneet 1.0 ja 1.1:lle ovat valmiit. Jahka kehittäjät saavat tuen 2.0:lle sen laajentaminen 3.0:aan ja 3.5:een ei liene niinkään kova rasti, koska molemmat ovat itseasiassa 2.0:n lisäosia, vaikkakin erittäin mielenkiintoisia sellaisia.

Itse olen nähnyt liikaa koodareita jotka eivät opi pois huonoista C:n tavoistaan kun yrittävät siirtyä siitä noihin kehittyneempiin kieliin (esim Java). Väittäisin myös että noiden korkeamman tason kielten opettelu ekana olisi helpompaa, ne kun ovat oikeasti helpompiakin.
